STATIVE AND DYNAMIC VERBS


Rule Example
1. Verbs in English are divided into stative (state) and dynamic (action).
2. Stative verbs describe a state, condition, or mental process. know the answer.
3. Dynamic verbs describe an action or activity. She is running.
4. Stative verbs usually do NOT take continuous forms. X I am knowing.  I know.
5. Dynamic verbs easily take continuous forms. She is dancing.
6. Stative verbs often express thoughts, feelings, possession, senses, and relationships. believe, want, love, hear, own
7, Main stative verb categories: emotions, mental states, senses, possession, measurements, appearance, existence. love, think, hear, have, weigh
8, Dynamic verbs express action, movement, or activity. run, read, cook, jump
9. Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic depending on meaning. He is thinking (considering) / I think (believe).
10. "Think" = believe (stative), gthink" = consider (dynamic). i think you're right. / I'm thinking about it.
11. "Have" = possession (stative), "have" experience/action (dynamic). have a car. / I'm having lunch.
12. "See" = perceive (stative), "see" = meet (dynamic). I see the bird. / I'm seeing the doctor.
13. "Be" is normally stative but becomes dynamic when showing behavior. She is being rude today.
14. "Taste" = sense (stative), "taste" try food (dynamic) This soup tastes great. / She is tasting the soup.
15. "Feel" = emotion (stative), "feel" = physical action (dynamic). I feel happy. / I'm feeling the fabric-
16. "Look" = appear (stative), "look" = direct eyes. (dynamic) You look tired. / He is Looking at me.
17. "Smell" sense (stative), = action (dynamic) The room smells bad. / He is smelling the flower,
18. "Fit" = be suitable (stative), "fit" = install (dynamic). This shirt fits me. / They are fitting new pipes.
19. "Measure" = have length/size (stative), "measure" determine size (dynamic). The table measures 5 feet. / He is measuring the table.
20. "Weigh" = have weight (stative), "weigh" = Check weight (dynamic). The bag weighs 10 kg. / He is weighing the bag.
21. Stative verbs rarely use present continuous in correct English. X I am loving it,  I love it,
22. Dynamic verbs form all continuous tenses naturally. He is working/ He was working
23. Stative verbs take simple tense even for current situations. I want coffee now.
24. Continuous tense makes no sense with stative meaning. X She is believing you. -n/ She believes you-
25, "Belong" is always stative. This bag belongs to me.
26. "Contain," "include," "consist of" are always stative. The box contains books.
27. "Own," "possess," "have (possession)" are stative. She owns a house.
28. "Agree," "disagree," "deny," "doubt", are stative I agree with you.
29. "Wish," '*hope," Uprefer" are stative. I prefer tea.
30. "Remember," "forget," "recognize" are stative. I recognize him.

37. "Enjoy," "expect," "appreciate" are dynamic when sh owing activity. I am enjoying the show.
38. "Live," "work," "study" are dynamic activities. He is living in Delhi.
39. "Cost" and "owe" are stative  don't use continuous. The phone costs t50,OOO.
40. "Be" in continuous shows temporary behavior or attitude. He is being stupid today.
41. "Think" in continuous means "consider." She is thinking about quitting.
42. "Feet" in continuous means "touching/experiencing physically." He is feeling the water temperature.
43. "Taste" in continuous means "testing flavor." She istasting the cake.
44. Stative verbs don't take passive except certain forms. X I am known the answer. I know the answer.
45, Dynamic verbs take passive forms easily. The food was cooked.
46. use simple tense with stative verbs for now/ongoing condition. I believe you (right now),
47. Don't use "do/does/did" question forms with continuous stative rbs, Do you understand? (not Are you understanding?)
48. Beware of marketing language using continuous stative verbs creatively. "I'm loving it!" (Not grammatically standard)
49. Understanding stative/dynamic verbs improves tense accuracy. correct: I think he's tired +
Wrong: I'm thinking he's tired.
